This lonely tree with its wide spreading branches is by Johan Thorn Prikker. With watercolour and wax crayons, the artist makes numerous lines in bright colours and with a smooth brushwork, with which he translates his observations of the landscape into a pure and aesthetic representation of nature. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Thorn Prikker regularly spent the summer months in the Belgian village of Visé. Here he made beautiful landscape drawings, such as Les Xhorres shown here, which are all about colour and dynamics.
Thorn Prikker, born in The Hague, lived in Germany for a large part of his life and died in Cologne in 1932. The Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo owns more than thirty works by Thorn Prikker, including two works with the same title as Les Xhorres shown here.
About Johan Thorn Prikker
Thorn Prikker is regarded in the Netherlands as one of the most important Symbolist artists. Together with Jan Toorop, he laid the foundation for Dutch Luminism. This art movement, which flourished between 1890 and 1920, focused on the depiction of light and light effects.
