Corneille is a Dutch painter and sculptor who is considered to be, next to Karel Appel and Constant, one of the most prominent figures of the COBRA-movement. In the fifties, he moved to Paris with fellow-artist Karel Appel. There he developed a style that is mostly characterised by the expression of emotion through deliberate and nuanced use of colours. In the sixties, he change course and diverted to making figurative art, with birds, women and flowers. Bright colours became more and more an important characteristic.
