Mark Smit Kunsthandel specializes in nineteenth and twentieth-century paintings. The gallery is situated on the banks of the river Vecht, in Ommen’s former town hall.
Mark grew up surrounded by art and accompanied his parents to museums and art dealers from an early age. His passion and interest for art remained strong while studying for his law degree; he even decided to do his final project on the subject of liability in art purchases. After graduation, in 2002, Mark decided to follow his heart and open his own art dealership with his wife Anna Smit-Loor. She previously worked at the twentieth-century art department at Christie’s in Amsterdam.
Collection and activities
Our collection of paintings and watercolours from the 1820-2000 period is one of the largest and most diverse in the Netherlands. The collection features works by almost all prominent painters from the Dutch Romantic movement and The Hague School, as well as works by leading impressionists, expressionists, members of the CoBrA group, and other leading post-war artists. We regularly lend works from our collection to national and international museums.
Every year, we organize two in-house sales exhibitions. During the winter exhibition, we display important works of art of museum quality and we also publish an extensive catalogue to accompany the event. We also exhibit at PAN Amsterdam, one of the leading art fairs in Europe.
Service
We value personal contact, quality, and service. Our clientele includes renowned collectors and museums both in the Netherlands and abroad. We are also more than happy to share our expert advice with first-time and new buyers.
Paintings from our collection are conserved by skilled restorers and placed in the best handmade frames.
Each work of art sold is accompanied by a valuation report/guarantee of authenticity including art-historical information for insurance purposes. Mark Smit is a registered nineteenth-century art appraiser and is recognized as such by and registered at the Dutch Federation of certified appraisers, brokers, and auctioneers in movable assets (Federation TMV).
Upon request, we can deliver your purchase and hang it up for you. We will gladly advise you on your home décor and on how to create a beautiful, high-quality collection.
