About Wouterus Verschuur

Wouterus Verschuur was the essential animal painter, with an emphasis on horses and dogs. He was taught by Jan van Os and was heavily influenced by the works of Philip Wouwerman. Verschuur’s work shows references to Wouwerman through his compositions and furbishings: the stable with open doors for a backdrop, a dappled grey for an eyecatcher, horses seen from every thinkable angle and dogs and chickens rummaging around. It’s important to keep in mind that Wouwerman and Verschuur alike, based their perceptions on a similar reality, namely that in the 17th as well as deep in the 19th century, horses were of huge importance to the infrastructure and thus formed an important part of daily life.
