Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa and his painting education
Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa (1861-1942) is known for his beautiful flower still lifes, dune and beach scenes with children, and tea gardens. Johannes Akkeringa, born in the Dutch East Indies, was the son of a Dutch father and an Indonesian mother. When Akkeringa was two years old, his father died suddenly from the effects of typhoid fever. His aunt took Akkeringa to the Netherlands. At the age of seventeen, Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa enrolled in the Hague Academy. This painting course offered him the opportunity to master the art of painting. There, he painted from plaster models and received lessons in perspective drawing. In 1887, Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa was awarded a royal grant and participated for the first time in the exhibition of living masters in The Hague. He was also admitted to the Hague painters' association Pulchri Studio and Arti et Amicitiae (Amsterdam). Here, Akkeringa could show his work to a wide audience and connect with potential buyers.
Successful painter
After his time at the academy, Johannes Akkeringa settled in Loosduinen. There, he created landscapes, children playing on the beach, or net menders in the dunes. These are almost always lighthearted depictions of carefree amusement. His use of color was usually cheerful. Sometimes Akkeringa painted outdoors directly onto the canvas; however, he mostly worked out his ‘en plein air’ sketches in the studio. His painting style can best be described as moderately Impressionistic, situated between the painters of the Hague School and the Amsterdam Impressionists. Akkeringa would live in The Hague for the greater part of his life, though he moved within it several times. In addition to landscapes, Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa had great success with his flower still lifes. Akkeringa preferred to paint snowberries or cluster roses, anemones, and nasturtiums, whether or not in a ginger jar. These vases were in fashion around 1900 and were imported into Europe in large quantities. In 1903, Akkeringa signed a contract with the renowned Amsterdam art dealer Van Wisselingh. In exchange for a monthly allowance, he supplied works to Van Wisselingh. Through this art dealer, his work was also exhibited in Germany, America, Canada, and Brazil. In this way, a large part of his oeuvre ended up in foreign collections. Works by Johannes Akkeringa can be found in the Rijksmuseum, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, and the Dordrechts Museum, among others.
