About Johan Thorn Prikker
Thorn Prikker is regarded in the Netherlands as one of the most important Symbolist artists. Together with Jan Toorop, he laid the foundation for Dutch Luminism. This art movement, which flourished between 1890 and 1920, focused on the depiction of light and light effects.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Thorn Prikker regularly spent the summer months in the Belgian village of Visé. Here, he created beautiful landscape drawings focusing on color and dynamism. The pastel drawings he made in Visé were initially not appreciated. In 1904, he moved to Germany, where he taught at various art academies and where people were open to innovation in art.
From that moment on, Thorn Prikker focused increasingly on applied arts. He believed that art should be at the service of society and accessible to everyone. He designed stained-glass windows, furniture, spectacular mosaics, and murals. Thorn Prikker, born in The Hague, lived the rest of his life in Germany and died in Cologne in 1932. The Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo owns more than thirty works by Thorn Prikker.
