About Leopold Carl Müller
Leopold Carl Müller (1834–1892) was a painter who became primarily known as one of the most important representatives of Orientalism in Austrian painting. He was born in Dresden, Germany, but grew up and worked mainly in Vienna, Austria. Leopold Carl Müller trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he focused on genre painting and historical subjects.
Travels to Africa
After several study trips, particularly to Egypt, his style and choice of subject matter changed. The travels to the Middle East strongly influenced Leopold Carl Müller and formed the foundation for his later work. Müller painted lively market scenes, Oriental dancers, street scenes, and skillfully painted portraits of Africans. His paintings stand out for their detailed observation, realistic lighting, and colorful compositions.
Appreciation
In the second half of the 19th century, Müller became a highly regarded painter in Austria. He became a professor at the academy in Vienna and thereby influenced a new generation of artists. His work contributed to the popularity of Orientalism in 19th-century European painting.

Paintings by Leopold Carl Müller are represented in various Austrian museums. Approximately 15 paintings, including 'The Market of Cairo', are in the collection of the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna. The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum in Linz, and the Leopold Museum in Vienna also have works by Müller in their collections.
