Jan Adam Zandleven

1868 - 1923

Jan Adam Zandleven (Koog aan de Zaan 18638 – Rhenen 1923) was an autodidact. He worked as a paint maker in his father’s shop. But his love for creating art was so strong, that in 1901, after he received endorsements from Gabriels as well as Israels, he decided to devote his life to painting. Zandleven drew his inspiration from many places, but nature was of the utmost importance to him. He enjoyed painting flowers, forestscapes and old farmhouses with blooming fruit orchard. Initially, he adopted a naturalist-impressionist style, which lateron evolved in a more pointillist manner of working. He moved to the Veluwe and headed out into the forest whenever he could, easel and paint on his back.

Zandleven was a respected member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. His work was much appreciated by the highly-influential art critic H.P. Bremmer. Jan Zandleven’s works can be found in several museums, such as the Centraal Museum in Utrecht and at the Kröller Müller in Otterloo.

Currently we don't have paintings by Jan Adam Zandleven in our collection.
