The views, the water, cows, horses and farms have been an important source of inspiration throughout his life. Benner's paintings are a true ode to the Frisian landscape.Gerrit Benner is considered one of the most important post-war Frisian painters. Born in Leeuwarden as an only child in a strict Catholic family, he had the ambition to become an artist from an early age. He develops his technique and his sophisticated painting eye on his own. During the Second World War, Benner goes into hiding with his family in a small Frisian village because he does not want to sign for the Kultuurkamer. There he came into contact with the painter Wim Kersten, who would later become curator of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
