About Gerhard Arij Ludwig 'Morgenstjerne' Munthe

Munthe lived and worked in Düsseldorf, The Hague and Katwijk aan Zee. He was educated at the Academy in Düsseldorf. There he predominantly painted beachscapes and seascapes with fishermen and ‘bomschuiten’, a type of flatboats. Munthe added Morgenstjerne (Norwegian for Morning Star) to his nameas a suffix, to distinguish himself from his uncle and namesake G.P.F.W. Munthe, a well-known landscape painter.
