Ben Viegers ( 1886 - 1947 ) - Gravenstraat in The Hague

Oil on canvas 40.5 x 31 cm, signed lower right
(Including frame 56 x 46 cm)

Ben Viegers is the gentleman among painters. Even when Viegers, who was born in The Hague, paints outside, and he likes to do so most of all, he is dressed perfectly. In the latter days of the Hague School, Ben Viegers mainly paints city and harbor views and landscapes, in the tradition of Dutch Impressionism. With a loose brush stroke and a lot of attention to the light. As can also be seen here on this beautiful Hague cityscape.

As his career progresses, his brushstroke becomes looser and his color palette more lavish. With this power of color Ben Viegers wants to counteract the gloomy times of the Second World War; he remains a true optimist and bon vivant.

The painting by Ben Viegers shown above shows Gravenstraat in The Hague with a view of the old town hall.
