His nickname is Anton Tulp. And that is not without reason. Anton Koster is the most famous painter of flower bulb fields in the Netherlands. In this watercolour he fully lives up to his nickname. The tulips in the foreground are painted beautifully. He depicts the tulip fields behind them in exuberant colours. Remarkably enough, Anton Koster, born in Zeeland, discovered the power of the bulb region in Paris. During a two-year study trip, after his education at the art academy in The Hague, he saw a painting that the French impressionist painter Claude Monet made in the bulb region. He was deeply impressed and once back in the Netherlands, he first settled in Haarlem and then in Heemstede. Every spring, Koster sets out with his sketchbook to capture the colourful splendour of the bulb fields. Based on these drawings and sketches, he creates the paintings in his studio that made him so famous.
Anton Koster initially painted and etched cityscapes and dune landscapes. But from 1885 onwards, at the age of 25, Koster specialised in painting the flowering tulip fields in the Dutch bulb-region.
