Theo Berndsen woonde en werkte in Laren tot 1918 en daarna in Amsterdam. In 1931 vertrok hij naar Davos. Theo Berndsen genoot zijn opleiding hij aan de Rijksacademie te Amsterdam. Het oeuvre van Berndsen is spaarzaam. Zijn manier van schilderen toont verwantschap met het werk van Piet van der Hem. Berndsen was lid van kunstgenootschap Arti et Amicitiae te Amsterdam
