Jean Gouweloos was born in Brussels in 1868. He was educated between 1886 and 1888 at the Brussels Academy Royale des Beaux-Arts. Gouweloos became a member of the avant-garde group Le Sillon, an association of Belgian visual artists who wanted to return to rich Flemish realistic painting. As a counterpart to neo-impressionism and symbolism. Jean Gouweloos was already a successful artist in his time. During the time he stayed in the Netherlands, he often painted the beach scenes. Portraits of women were a favorite subject of Gouweloos, for which he received a lot of appreciation. Elegant women lost in thought in a subdued setting in subtle colors.
