About Charles Leickert
Charles Leickert was born in Brussels and grew up in The Hague. His childhood was anything but prosperous. Both his parents died at a young age, and Charles Leickert and his two sisters were placed in the orphanage of the Reformed Church. His talent for painting must have been recognized early, however, as Charles Leickert enrolled at the Hague Drawing Academy at the age of eleven. His contact with the gifted painter Wynand Nuyen, who encouraged Leickert to focus more on nature, was crucial to his development as an artist. After Nuyen's untimely death in 1839, Charles Leickert became a pupil of the highly regarded Romantic painter Andreas Schelfhout.
Under Schelfhout's supervision, Charles Leickert made great progress and introduced greater variety into his subjects. Initially, he primarily painted summer landscapes, but under the influence of his teacher, he painted more winter landscapes and ice scenes. The 1840s also saw the emergence of the first beach scenes, a genre that originated in the 17th century and was revived by Schelfhout.
In 1856, Charles Leickert was appointed a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. Works by this artist can be seen in many Dutch museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
