In 1909, Mommie Schwarz came into contact with artist Else Berg in Berlin. Their meeting marked the beginning of a close personal and artistic relationship. Schwarz and Berg traveled to Paris together, which at the time was the center of the avant-garde. There they encountered innovative movements such as Fauvism and early Cubism.
The artistic bond between Schwarz and Berg, who married in 1920, was exceptionally strong. Their paintings often show significant stylistic similarities, making it sometimes difficult to attribute a work to one of them. This reflects their joint search for innovation in painting.
This painting was created around 1911-1912, after Schwarz’s stay in Paris, when he settled in Amsterdam and maintained close contact with Leo Gestel. The work depicts a colorful luminist landscape, clearly showing the influence of modern French painting.
