The work of Jo Koster was strongly influenced by both Vincent van Gogh and the art educator H.P. Bremmer. She is often counted among the so-called 'Bremmerians,' a group of artists who worked under the influence of Bremmer's ideas.
Between 1910 and the early 1924, Jo Koster lived and worked in Hattem. This period marked an important flourishing phase in her artistry, during which she created a large part of her most characteristic work.
Although Koster also continued to paint in a naturalistic style, between 1900 and 1920 she mainly worked in a luminist and neo-impressionist style. It was precisely with this colorful way of painting that she gained her greatest fame. The bright colors, lively brushstrokes, and focus on the effect of light give her work a striking appearance. This is clearly visible in this 1918 painting, where the rich use of color and the painterly touch are characteristic of the neo-impressionist style for which Jo Koster became known.
